On March 16, 2010, the Downtown Association Board of Santa Cruz voted 8-1 to lift a downtown ban on dogs that has been in effect since 1976.
The lift of the pooch prohibition is in effect on a trial basis for the next six months and there are some pretty strict guidelines that need be followed by pet owners who want it to become permanent. The city currently requires owners to license, vaccinate, leash and clean up after their dogs. Recommendations for the new ordinance are that leashes are between three and five feet long, no dogs allowed after dark, and you cannot have more than three dogs close together at any one time.
As a dog nut myself, the change is welcome news.
